Aerospace/Defense

Space Launch Complex 41, CCAS, FL – Design and construction support for the demolition of the existing launch structures and design of the new facilities required for development of Lockheed Martin’s EELV (AtlasV-East Coast) Program. Main facilities included two chiller/boiler plants, the VIF (included a class 100,000 clean room on level 5) and the PEB. As one of two Senior Mechanical Engineers, my system responsibilities included: Chilled-water cooling, electric heating, and pressurization of the four major buildings used at this site, as well as coordinating with the other Senior Mechanical Engineer in support of the vehicle environmental system requirements.

Astronaut Biosafety Laboratory-NASA , KSC, FL – Designed a 800 square foot, Biosafety Level III Laboratory using a 100% exhausted Class II, Type B2,  biological safety cabinet. Lab is located within an existing NASA Facility (O&C Building). This is used for testing astronaut bodily fluids before and after space missions. Requirements included said biosafety cabinet, critical environmental conditions (such as temperature, humidity, and cleanliness) as well as maintaining a directional airflow into the lab from adjacent office areas. Systems responsible for included: a chilled water air-handling unit with HEPA filters, electric preheat/reheat, a HEPA filtered exhaust system, and plumbing system modifications.

Space Launch Complex 3E, Vandenberg, CA – Design and construction support for the demolition of the existing launch structures and design of the new facilities required for development of Lockheed Martin’s EELV (AtlasV-WestCoast) Program. Main facilities included two chiller/boiler plants, the MST (included a clean area between levels 11 and 16) and the LSB. As one of two Senior Mechanical Engineers, my system responsibilities included: Chilled-water cooling, electric heating, and pressurization of various buildings used at this site, as well as coordinating with the other Senior Mechanical Engineer in support of the vehicle environmental system requirements.

NASA –Kennedy Space Center, FL – Responsible for the operations and maintenance (including all design modifications) of two (2) 12,000 ton chiller plants, a 90 million and 70 million HP boiler plant, as well as their associated campus distribution and water treatment systems. These district heating and cooling plants provided mission essential service to most of the launch support facilities on the center.

 Radome, Ascension Island, Atlantic Ocean –  Replacement of the air conditioning system for the existing radar dish’s dome shaped enclosure. System responsible for included: Various, constant volume, direct expansion air handling systems with electric heat.

Pyramidal Radiation Absorbent Material (RAM) Test Chamber, Palm Bay, FL– Existing direct expansion (DX) air handlers and basic controls system needed to be upgraded to install a 60’x60’x60’ pyramidal RAM test chamber at Building 23, Harris Corporation. I worked as a sub-contractor to a local A-E firm and HVAC contractor to successfully install design-build this chamber, and upgrade the HVAC systems, within very tight time constraints and operational parameters.

Renovate Medical Rescue Training Facility, Bldg. 996, PAFB, FL- Complete renovation of the existing 11,250 square foot facility for the 920th ASTS Rescue Wing. New HVAC system included a central VAV air handling unit, ERV heat recovery, and chilled water system. Restrooms were modified and new break room added.

Renovate Administrative Facility, Bldg. 1360, PAFB, FL- Complete renovation of the existing 5,720 square foot facility for the 920th ASTS Rescue Wing. New HVAC system included a central VAV air handling unit, and chilled water system. Complete plumbing upgrade including physician examination rooms.

Expand/Replace Base Pharmacy, PAFB, FL – Design of the demolition and remodeling as well as addition to the existing pharmacy building. Systems responsible for included: Various, constant volume, direct expansion air handling systems with electric heat, and exhaust system.

Renovate Base Cafeteria, Bldg. 350, PAFB, FL- Complete renovation of the existing 21,250 square foot facility for the 45th Space Wing. New HVAC system included four central air handling units, kitchen hood controls, and chilled water system modifications. Plumbing within mechanical room modified.

 Telescope Dome, Malabar, FL – Design and construction oversight of a telescope dome HVAC system.  Special design considerations included a temperature control system based on ambient dew point conditions to allow opening the telescope without condensation/fogging occurring on lenses. This system included a packaged air cooled chiller, various air-handlers and a specialized control system.

Tel IV Radar and Tracking Center, CCAS, FL – Construction administration of the entire HVAC system replacement while maintaining facility operational to support KSC and CCAS space programs.

Forestry Building, Fort Stewart, GA – Design of a new 4,000 square foot office/conference center. Design of a 20,000 square foot, 2-story addition to the existing building. Systems responsible for included: Various direct expansion cooling and electric heat systems, exhaust and plumbing systems.

Institutional

University of Minnesota, Kohltoff Science Building, Minneapolis, MN– Design of a chilled water HVAC system for a Class 4 Laser Laboratory with three (3) separate research tables. Each table is enclosed in laser curtains with a dedicated air handling unit providing critical air temperature, humidity and class 100,000 cleanliness.

University of Minnesota, Gibson-Nagurski Building, Minneapolis, MN– Design of modifications to the existing HVAC system serving the Gopher Football Team’s Locker Room. Design included operational heat recovery and individual locker exhaust systems.

University of Minnesota, Gortner Laboratory Building, Minneapolis, MN– Design of modifications to the existing HVAC system serving a chemical laboratory. Design included fume hood, as well as general room exhaust, and supply air distribution to maintain room conditions, energy efficiency and slightly negative room conditions.

University of Minnesota, Nils Hasselmo Building, Minneapolis, MN– Design of modifications to an existing air handling unit with a failed preheat steam coil. Design included replacement of existing coil with two(2) “Wing” coils with proper condensate slope and a single control valve to ensure non-freezing protection.

University of Minnesota, Printing Services Building, Minneapolis, MN– Design of a direct expansion RTU to replace existing unit. Design included increasing ventilation rates while incorporating hot gas reheat technology to reduce the use of existing hydronic reheat system and save energy. Facility also required upgrade to controls to better maintain critical temperature and humidity in production areas.

Brevard Community College (Building No. 3), Palm Bay, FL  – Design of a new 40,000 square foot, 3-story educational facility. Systems responsible for included: Various, chilled water, variable-air-volume air handling systems with hydronic heating, as well as  the exhaust, fire protection and plumbing systems.

Ferncreek Elementary School, Orlando, FL  Design of new HVAC and plumbing systems for a recently burned down Kindergarten Wing. Systems responsible for included: Several new, direct expansion, air conditioning units with electric heat, a new outside air make-up unit and plumbing system.

Brighton School of Excellence, FL  – Design of the direct expansion HVAC and plumbing systems for a new 55,000 square foot elementary school. Systems responsible for included: Several new, direct expansion, air conditioning units with electric heat, a new outside air make-up unit and plumbing system.

Jefferson Middle School, Merritt Island, FL – Design of an air cooled, chilled water, VAV system and plumbing systems (including fume hoods, propane gas distribution w/tank, and chemical waste systems) for a new 12,000 sf science laboratory building.

Bonneville Elementary School, Orlando, FL – Design of an air cooled, chilled water plant, various VAV systems and plumbing systems for 65,000 square feet of new classroom/administrative buildings as well as a 7,000 square foot classroom renovation.

Brevard County Detention Center, Sharpes, FL – Designed the packaged central chiller plant and associated air handling systems for the four (4) new inmate tent structures. Said plant included considerations to accommodate the future medical/mental health pod (now complete). The mechanical engineering design also included the plumbing and fire sprinkler systems. The mechanical site plan for the distribution of chilled water and natural gas services required particularly close coordination with the civil and electrical site plans and the eventual incorporation of a utility corridor.

Washingtonville   Jr. High School, Washingtonville, NY – Design and construction oversight of an 8,000 square foot renovation/addition to the kitchen/cafeteria area. Systems responsible for included: Modification to the existing hydronic heating system, a new exhaust system, and plumbing system.

Kutsher’s Sports Academy, Loch Sheldrake, NY  – Design of a new, 20,000 square foot, multi-purpose building. Building included a large multipurpose room, restrooms/lockers, and commercial kitchen. Systems responsible for included: Several large, direct-expansion cooling units with gas fueled heating, walk-in coolers, and plumbing system.

Industrial

Hill Road Pump Station, Washington D.C., MD – Design of a major, pressure boosting station for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. Responsible for the design of the demolition of the existing undersized pumps and the installation of four new pumps (two 800 H.P and two 600 H.P.), as well as the facility ventilation and domestic plumbing systems.

James River Corporation, Glens Falls, NY – Design of ventilation and heating system for approximately 20,000 square foot paper production plant. Systems responsible for included: The addition of several roof mounted gas fired heating and ventilation units.

General Electric’s Central Chilled Water Plant, Pittsfield, MA – Comprehensive 9 month study of an existing 1,500 ton, chiller plant and cooling towers (included in-depth, data gathering such as historic trending, flows, peaks, etc…) and design of the subsequent plant modifications recommended as part of this study.

Nashua Tape Corporation, Nashua, NH  – Design and construction oversight of a dust collection system for the production line. System included specialized adhesive dust collection equipment as well as customized exhaust hoods and exhaust fans and collection hoppers.

Commercial

Williams Communication’s (Various Facilities), Various Cities, FL – Design of various computer environment facilities for this fiber optic communications company. Facilities ranged in size from 1,500 square feet to 3,500 square feet. Systems responsible for included: several, split system, direct expansion, computer room units and plumbing systems.

Port Canaveral Parking Garage, Cape Canaveral, FL – Design of a new 350,000 square foot, 6 storey facility. Systems responsible for included: Storm drainage up to five feet from structure, ventilation and cooling for elevator/storage areas, fire protection/plumbing.

Cuyler Park Community   Center, Mims, FL – Design of a new 5,000 square foot community center with a commercial kitchen. Systems responsible for included: a central, direct expansion cooling system with hot-gas reheat/electric reheat, kitchen exhaust system and plumbing system.

South Mainland Community   Center, Micco, FL  – Design of a new 5,000 square foot community center with a commercial kitchen. Systems responsible for included: a central, direct expansion cooling system with hot-gas reheat/electric reheat, kitchen exhaust system and plumbing system.

Building ‘A’ Addition, Viera, FL  – Design of a 20,000 square foot, 2-story addition to the existing building. Systems responsible for included: Roof mounted, air cooled chiller with various, variable-air-volume air handling systems, exhaust, fire protection and plumbing systems.

Melbourne Beach Public Library, Melbourne Beach, FL  – Design of a new 15,000 square foot facility. Systems responsible for included: Pad mounted, air cooled chiller with various, variable-air-volume air handling systems, exhaust, fire protection and plumbing systems.

Crystal Run Corporate Park (Building 2), Wallkill, NY  – Design and construction oversight of a 25,000 square foot speculative office space. Systems responsible for included: several packaged, rooftop, direct-expansion cooling units with gas fired heat, the fire protection, plumbing systems and lighting.

Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Wallkill, NY –  Design of a new 45,000 square foot office facility. Systems responsible for included: several packaged rooftop, direct-expansion cooling units, a gas-fired hydronic heating system, fire protection and the plumbing system.

Crystal Run Corporate Park (Building 4), Wallkill, NY –  Design of a new 100,000 square foot office facility. Systems responsible for included: several packaged rooftop, direct-expansion cooling units, a gas-fired hydronic heating system, fire protection and the plumbing system.

Historical Religious Buildings

St. Dominic Convent, Blauvelt, NY (Historical Structures Dating Back to 1878)– While maintaining the historical integrity of the buildings, provided design and construction oversight of the decentralization of the 8 building campus’s hydronic heating and domestic hot water system. Systems responsible for included: Several gas fired boiler systems and the connection to the existing services at each building.

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Middletown, NY (1824)– While maintaining the historical integrity of the building, provided design and construction oversight for the replacement of the HVAC system.

 

Residential

Command Hill Barracks, Ascension Island, Atlantic Ocean – Complete renovation of the existing barracks with the addition of a potable water line to the top of the hill from the nearby base system and a gray water irrigation system. Systems responsible for included: Various, direct expansion PTAC units with electric heat, and exhaust system.

Oceanwoods Condominiums, Cape Canaveral, FL– Design of a 6 building condominium complex. Systems responsible for included: Various, constant volume, direct expansion air handling systems with electric heat, and exhaust system.

Milrose Hotel, Cape Canaveral, FL– Design of a 215 room hotel in the port area. Systems included: various DX, roof mounted HVAC systems as well as plumbing systems.

Brown’s Villas, Loch Sheldrake, NY – Design and construction oversight of 130, 2-story, luxury townhouses. Systems responsible for included: Hydronic heating, dx cooling, plumbing system, lighting as well as electrical power for typical units.

Phillips Mews Condominiums, Middletown, NY – Design and construction oversight of 63, 2-story, condominiums. Systems responsible for included: Hydronic heating, dx cooling, and plumbing systems for typical units.

Vernon Grove Condominiums, Saddle Brook, NJ  – Design and construction oversight of 63, 2-story, condominiums. Systems responsible for included: Hydronic heating, dx cooling, and plumbing systems for typical units as well as building fire protection systems.
